To homeschool legally under the "Third Option" (SC Code § 59-65-47), you must:
1. Hold at least a High School Diploma or GED.
2. Join an accountability association like Discovery Homeschooling.
3. Teach for at least 180 days per year.
4. Maintain a Plan Book, a Portfolio of work, and semi-annual Progress Reports
South Carolina law requires five basic instructional areas: Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Reading, and Writing (which becomes Composition and Literature in grades 7–12). You are free to add any electives your child is interested in, such as Art, Music, or PE!
Under the Third Option, there is no specific "seat time" requirement for the number of hours you must school each day. Homeschooling is highly efficient; many families find they can complete their core academic work in 2–4 hours. If your educational goals for the day were met, it counts as a day.
You must document at least 180 days of instruction. You are not required to follow the public-school calendar—you can school on weekends, over the summer, or follow a year-round schedule, as long as you hit the 180-day mark.
A portfolio is a "scrapbook" of your student's progress. It should include:
*Samples of work from each of the five required subjects.
*Samples from the beginning, middle, and end of the year to show growth.
*Worksheets, essays, photos of science experiments, or lists of books read.
We recommend keeping your records and portfolios for at least two years. For high school students, you should keep their records and portfolios permanently, as they may be needed for future college admissions or employment verification.
I just withdrew my child from public school today. When do I need to join an accountability group?
In South Carolina, you should be enrolled in an accountability group within 10 days of withdrawing from your previous school to avoid any gaps in legal coverage. We recommend having your Discovery membership confirmed before you officially send in your withdrawal letter.
No. In South Carolina, you have the right to homeschool. You do not ask for "permission"; instead, you notify the school that you are withdrawing your student to homeschool under the Third Option. Providing them with your Discovery membership letter is usually all that is required.
Yes! You can begin homeschooling at any point in the year. We will help you "count" the days your child already attended public school toward your 180-day total so you can pick up exactly where they left off.
Yes. Under the Equal Access to Interscholastic Activities Act, homeschoolers can participate in extracurricular activities like sports at their local zoned school. You must notify the district superintendent in writing of your intent to participate before the season begins.
As the parent-teacher, you have the authority to decide when your child is ready for the next grade. At the end of the year, you will complete your final progress report and check off "Promoted to Grade [X]" in your records. Discovery will then update your student’s grade level in our system for the upcoming year.

To remain in "Good Standing" and renew your legal coverage, you must submit a Year-End Completion Report through our member portal.
Deadlines: May 31st for High School (Grades 9–12) and June 30th for Grades K–8.
The Requirements: You will submit a digital form confirming you completed 180 days of instruction and have maintained your required Portfolio and Plan Book. You do not have to turn in the Portfolio or Plan Book.
Grades: You must submit semester and year-end numerical grades. For High Schoolers, we require specific course titles (e.g., "Biology with Lab") and units earned to maintain their official transcripts.
You are the master of your own schedule! Our administrative year runs from June 1st through May 31st. You can follow a traditional calendar, school year-round, or use "block scheduling," as long as you document 180 days of learning within that window.
Discovery Tip: If you are withdrawing from a public school mid-year, those attended days do count toward your 180-day total!
One of the best parts of homeschooling is the freedom to choose a curriculum that actually fits your child’s interests and learning style! Because of this, Discovery Homeschooling does not provide a pre-packaged curriculum. As a "Third Option" association, our role is to provide the legal umbrella and professional accountability for your home school. You have the ultimate freedom to use traditional textbooks, online programs, unit studies, or an eclectic mix of resources, provided you cover the five required subject areas.
We know that the thousands of curriculum options can feel overwhelming, especially if your child has unique learning needs. While curriculum choice is a parental responsibility, you don't have to do it alone!
Standard Members: Can access our curated "Resource Directory" of tried-and-true recommendations.
Specialized Support: If you need a deeper dive, you can book a Curriculum Consultation with one of our learning support experts. We will look at your child’s specific strengths and challenges and help you build a custom "map" for the school year.

Membership fees for Discovery Homeschooling are non-refundable.
When you join, your fee immediately covers the administrative costs of establishing your student’s legal file, processing your enrollment, and issuing your legal compliance documentation for the state of South Carolina. Because these professional services are rendered at the time of enrollment, we cannot offer refunds if you choose to re-enroll in a traditional school, move out of state, or discontinue homeschooling during the academic year.
Moving Out of State? If you move, please notify us! While we cannot refund the fee, we will provide you with a final "Letter of Good Standing" and a copy of your student's records to ensure a smooth transition to your new state’s educational requirements.
Discovery remains the legal custodian of your records even after you move. We ensure your student’s hard work follows them wherever they go.
Official Transcripts: We can send physical, embossed transcripts or secure digital versions directly to a new school or college admissions office.
Proof of Legal Compliance: If your new state requires proof that you homeschooled legally in SC, we provide a formal "Letter of Good Standing" citing SC Code §59-65-47.
Transferring Credits: Our transcripts use standard Carnegie Units, making them easy for registrars in other states to "translate" and accept.
Once you have a move date, log into the Member Portal and submit a Withdrawal/Transfer Request.
Standard Members: Receive one official transcript "archival" at withdrawal.
Specialized Support: Includes a Transition Consultation to help you navigate the homeschooling laws of your new state.
Yes. If you move mid-year, please notify us to officially "close" your student’s SC file. This ensures the state knows you are now following the laws of your new home and are no longer under our oversight.
Discovery Tip: If a new school asks for "validation" of credits, provide your stored course descriptions and work samples to prove the rigor of your student’s education.
Yes. As a recognized South Carolina "Option 3" association, our diplomas and transcripts are valid credentials for college admissions, military enlistment, and federal financial aid.
Transcript vs. Diploma: While the diploma is a ceremonial document, colleges rely on the Official Transcript. Discovery maintains these records, translating your coursework into the GPA and credit format admissions officers expect.
Independent Verification: Our signature on your transcript provides the third-party accountability that universities require, carrying more weight than a parent-issued document.
Scholarship Ready: Our transcripts are fully compatible with South Carolina state scholarships, including Palmetto Fellows, LIFE, and HOPE.
College Prep Standards: To ensure your student is "college-ready," we recommend following the SC Commission on Higher Education (CHE) requirements. Meeting these standards often gives homeschoolers a competitive "standout" advantage in the application process.
The Bottom Line: We handle the high-stakes paperwork so your student can focus on their dream school.
As an Option 3 association, Discovery Homeschooling provides the official transcripts and class rankings required for these state-funded awards.
1. The LIFE Scholarship ($5,000/year)
To qualify for a 4-year college, students must meet two of these three criteria:
*GPA: 3.0+ on the SC Uniform Grading Scale (SC UGP).
*Test Scores: 1100+ SAT (Math/EBRW) or 22+ ACT.
*Class Rank: Top 30% of the Discovery Homeschooling graduating class. (Note: For 2-year technical colleges, only the 3.0 GPA is required.)
2. The Palmetto Fellows Scholarship (Up to $7,500/year)
There are two ways to qualify for this prestigious award:
Rank-Based: Top 6% of class AND 1200 SAT / 25 ACT AND 3.5 GPA.
Alternative: 1400+ SAT / 31+ ACT AND 4.0 GPA (regardless of rank).
3. Deadlines & Calculations
Grade Submission: All high school grades must be submitted to Discovery by May 31st.
The "June 15th" Rule: Per state law, all scholarship rankings must be calculated by June 15th. Late grade submissions may result in your student being excluded from the ranking pool.
Official Transcripts: Discovery sends your final, signed transcript directly to the college financial aid office to confirm eligibility.
1. The Benefits
GPA Boost: DE courses receive a +1.0 quality point weighting on the SC Uniform Grading Scale (the same as AP courses).
Lottery Tuition Assistance (LTA): SC residents taking at least 6 credit hours (typically 2 classes) per semester at a technical college often qualify for LTA, which can cover most or all tuition costs.
College Readiness: Students experience college rigor while maintaining their homeschool safety net.
2. Eligibility Requirements
Grade Level: Typically 11th and 12th graders (9th/10th with special Discovery advocacy).
Academic Standing: A minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA is generally required.
Readiness: Qualifying scores on the SAT, ACT, or ACCUPLACER placement test.
3. Getting Started
Select a College: Most families use local technical colleges (e.g., Midlands Tech, Trident Tech) or 4-year universities.
Get Approval: Contact Discovery before applying to ensure the courses align with your graduation track.
Request Records: Request an official transcript via the Member Portal to prove eligibility.
4. Submit Paperwork: Complete the college’s Dual Enrollment Permission Form, which requires a signature from Discovery as your "School Official."
5. Maintain a "C": You must earn a C or better for the credit to transfer to future colleges.
Discovery Tip: The "Permanent Record"
Because these are real college courses, the grades stay on your permanent college transcript forever. We recommend starting with 1–2 courses to ensure success.
Getting accommodations (like extended time) for the SAT or ACT requires two types of evidence. Discovery acts as your "School Official" to provide the necessary educational verification.
1. The Two Requirements
Clinical Evidence: A formal diagnosis (e.g., ADHD or Dyslexia) from your doctor or specialist. You must provide this.
Educational Evidence: Proof that the student actually uses these accommodations in their daily schoolwork. Discovery provides this verification.
2. Our Role as Your "School Official"
For the SAT (College Board): We can act as your SSD Coordinator, submitting the request through their online portal and verifying your student's history of use.
For the ACT: We provide the required signature and an association letter confirming your child’s status and their consistent use of accommodations at home.
3. Avoiding the "Last-Minute" Denial
The #1 reason accommodations are denied is a lack of "history of use." Testing boards want to see that these supports aren't just for the test.
Pro Tip: If you are on our Specialized Support ($200) tier, we help you build a professional "paper trail" in your Plan Book and Progress Reports to ensure your request is audit-proof.
Reports starting in 9th grade. This creates the multi-year "paper trail" that the College Board and ACT look for during the approval process.
4. Steps to Take
Start Early: We recommend starting the application process at least four months before the test date.
Gather Your Medical Files: Ensure your student’s evaluations are current (usually within the last 3–5 years).
Request an Advocacy Letter: Contact Discovery to request a formal letter of support that outlines the accommodations your student uses for their high school credits.
Yes. We specialize in connecting families with evidence-based tools for "outside-the-box" learners.
Curriculum Recommendations: We can point you toward proven programs
Specialized Support: Our Specialized Support ($200) members receive custom curriculum mapping and coaching on using accommodations (like audiobooks or speech-to-text) so your child can keep learning other subjects while they master reading.
Local Referrals: We maintain a list of South Carolina-based specialists, tutors, and evaluators who can provide deeper insights into your child's specific learning profile.
Yes. While homeschooling allows for a customized pace, we provide several tools to help you measure progress against standard milestones:
Grade-Level Checklists: We can provide summaries of the South Carolina College- and Career-Ready Standards so you can see what same-aged peers are learning in public school. https://eoc.sc.gov/families
Standardized Testing (Optional): While not required by law for our members, we can help you arrange "nationally normed" testing (like the IOWA or Stanford 10) if you want an objective data point.
Specialized Review: For our Specialized Support ($200) members, we offer 1-on-1 consultations to review your student’s portfolio and determine if they are meeting developmentally appropriate goals.
Mastery Learning: We advocate for "Mastery over Milestones." If your child is struggling with a concept, we help you adjust the pace until they truly understand it—ensuring they stay "on track" for long-term success rather than just passing a test.
